The Complete Guide to Bourbon & Cigar Pairings at Karma Cigar Bar
There’s a reason bourbon and cigars have been paired together for over a century. It’s not tradition for tradition’s sake. It’s chemistry — and once you understand why they work together, every pairing you experience becomes richer.
At Karma Cigar Bar in Merrillville, Indiana, our specialists have spent years developing specific pairings between the cigars in our 1,800+ humidor and the bourbons behind our bar. This guide covers the science, the method, and five pairings you can experience the next time you visit.
Why Bourbon and Cigars Work Together
Both bourbon and premium cigars are products of time, heat, and transformation. The flavor compounds that develop during each aging process create natural bridges between the two.
The shared flavor families:
Oak and wood — Bourbon spends years in charred oak barrels. Premium cigar tobacco is often aged in cedar, and the cedar notes in a well-constructed cigar echo the barrel character in aged bourbon. Both develop tannins that give structure and depth.
Vanilla and caramel — The char inside a bourbon barrel caramelizes the wood sugars, producing vanilla and caramel compounds. These same sweet notes appear in Connecticut wrapper cigars and lighter Dominican tobaccos — creating a natural complement.
Smoke and earth — Both bourbon and cigars carry smoke as a fundamental element. The smoke in bourbon (from the charred barrel) and the smoke in a cigar (from combustion of aged tobacco) are different expressions of the same character. When they combine, neither overwhelms — they amplify.
Pepper and spice — High-rye bourbons carry a peppery backbone. Nicaraguan cigars, particularly full-bodied blends, share that spice character. Pairing them creates intensity that keeps the palate engaged from the first sip to the final draw.
The goal of pairing isn’t to make your bourbon taste like your cigar or vice versa — it’s to find combinations where each makes the other better. The right pairing elevates both.
The 3-Step Tasting Method
Before diving into specific pairings, here’s how to taste a bourbon and cigar combination properly. Most people do this intuitively — this method makes it conscious.
Step 1: Sip
Take a small sip of bourbon. Let it coat your palate. Don’t swallow immediately. Notice the flavors — the sweetness, the proof, the finish. Note what you taste.
Step 2: Draw
Take a slow draw on the cigar. Hold the smoke in your mouth briefly before exhaling through your nose. Notice the flavors — the wrapper character, the strength, the retrohale.
Step 3: Sip again
Take another sip of bourbon immediately after the draw. This is where the pairing reveals itself. The flavors that weren’t there a moment ago — the interplay between the tobacco and the spirit — emerge in this third step.
The difference between step 1 and step 3 is the pairing. When you’ve found the right combination, the second sip tastes better than the first.
5 Pairings from Karma’s Bar and Humidor
These aren’t theoretical — these are pairings our specialists have developed using the cigars and bourbons we actually carry.
Pairing 1: Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned + HB Cherry Corona
The bourbon: Buffalo Trace in a Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned — caramel, vanilla, Angostura bitters, orange peel. Smooth, approachable, $6 during Happy Hour.
The cigar: Karma’s House Blend Cherry Corona — our own flavored blend, mild to medium body, cherry sweetness, smooth draw.
Why it works: The Cherry Corona’s natural sweetness mirrors the caramel and vanilla in Buffalo Trace. The orange peel in the Old Fashioned bridges to the cherry notes in the HB blend. This is the most accessible pairing on the list — ideal for someone new to cigar and bourbon pairing.
The experience: Sweet leads the conversation. Neither the cigar nor the bourbon fights for dominance. This is the pairing for a relaxed Tuesday evening, not a power dinner.
Pairing 2: Blanton’s Neat + Padrón 1926
The bourbon: Blanton’s Single Barrel — honey, dried fruit, vanilla, and a long finish. 93 proof. The original single barrel bourbon, still the benchmark.
The cigar: Padrón 1926 — the Padrón family’s most prestigious line. Nicaraguan puro. Box-pressed. Full-bodied with cocoa, leather, coffee, and a finish that lasts.
Why it works: This is a complexity pairing. Blanton’s fruit-forward character — dried cherry, honey, orange — finds its match in the Padrón 1926’s dark fruit and leather. The cigar’s full body needs a bourbon with enough character to keep pace. Blanton’s delivers without competing.
The experience: Both are at their best separately. Together, they become a conversation. This pairing rewards attention — taste it slowly.
Pairing 3: Woodford Reserve + Arturo Fuente Hemingway
The bourbon: Woodford Reserve — fruit-forward, refined, with dried cherry, mint, and toasted oak. 90.4 proof. The most elegant standard-proof bourbon on the market.
The cigar: Arturo Fuente Hemingway — the figurado shape that made Fuente a household name. Dominican tobacco, natural wrapper, medium body. Cedar, cream, and a clean finish.
Why it works: Both are refined without being restrained. Woodford’s elegance matches the Hemingway’s precision. The dried cherry notes in Woodford echo the subtle sweetness in the Fuente natural wrapper. Neither overwhelms the other.
The experience: This is the pairing for someone who appreciates craftsmanship. The Hemingway rewards a slow smoke. Woodford rewards a slow pour. Combined, they create 90 minutes of genuine pleasure.
Pairing 4: Region 5 + Darren Shah Connecticut
The bourbon: Region 5 — our locally positioned premium pour, smooth and accessible with balanced sweetness and oak.
The cigar: Darren Shah Connecticut — premium Connecticut wrapper, shade-grown, silky draw, mild to medium body with cream and cedar notes.
Why it works: The Connecticut wrapper is the most food-friendly cigar wrapper available — its natural creaminess pairs with virtually any spirit. Region 5’s smooth character doesn’t compete with the delicate Connecticut profile. This is the “gateway pairing” — the combination that introduces people to the ritual without overwhelming them.
The experience: Clean. Comfortable. The kind of pairing you return to on a weeknight when you don’t want to think too hard — you just want to enjoy.
Pairing 5: Maker’s Mark Manhattan + Liga Privada No. 9
The bourbon: Maker’s Mark Manhattan — Maker’s wheated mash bill, sweet vermouth, bitters. Soft, slightly sweet, herbal complexity from the vermouth.
The cigar: Liga Privada No. 9 — Drew Estate’s crown jewel. Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper, seven-country blend. Full-bodied, bold. Espresso, leather, dark fruit, perfect construction.
Why it works: This is the contrast pairing. The Maker’s Manhattan’s softness and sweetness creates a counterpoint to the Liga No. 9’s power. The maduro’s natural sweetness bridges the gap. The vermouth’s herbal notes add a dimension that a neat bourbon doesn’t.
The experience: The Manhattan tames the Liga No. 9 just enough to make it approachable. The Liga No. 9 adds backbone to the Manhattan. Both are better together than alone.
